Winner of the Golden Lion 1959, directed by Roberto Rossellini and featuring Vittoria de Sica, the film is based on the true story of a con artist during the height of WWII.

Forced by the Nazis to impersonate an Italian resistance leader (General della Rovere), he infiltrates a group of resistance prisoners and gradually, wrestling with his conscience for the first time, loses himself in his role.
